Luna May Allen Cornish

Luna May Allen Cornish was born in Thornton, St Elizabeth, Jamaica, W.I. to James and Mary Allen, two God-fearing parents who instilled in their family the values of faith, hard work, endurance, and love. She was born into a large family of six boys and five girls, and she was the seventh child and the first daughter.

Life was not easy for Luna and her family. Although she desired to receive a good education, she was denied that precious opportunity because she was needed at home to help care for the family. Though this was disappointing, it never broke her spirit. Luna was a strong-willed woman with great determination, deep faith, and big dreams. Through sickness and health, hardship and sacrifice, she pressed forward.

Marriage was not originally part of her plans, but God had other plans. Luna met and married Winston Cornish, and together they were blessed with seven children. Their oldest child died at a young age, a loss the family mourned deeply for many years. Luna went on to practically raise six children on her own with courage, strength, and devotion. She was also faithful in caring for her father after the passing of her mother.

In 1970, Luna migrated to America. With great sacrifice and tireless determination, she worked to bring her children to America, which she accomplished in 1974. She began working as a domestic worker and later became an entrepreneur after learning the system, allowing her to better manage her schedule and provide for her family. Luna provided service to many clients, including doctors, business owners, famous actors, and others with whom she formed lasting friendships.

Never one to stop growing, Luna eventually obtained her GED and became a Certified Nursing Assistant. She took great pride in caring for those assigned to her and served with diligence, compassion, and excellence.

Luna was also a faithful and dedicated servant of God. She gave strong support to the church, both financially and through her time, talents, and service. As a faithful church member, she held numerous offices, including Deaconess, Head Deaconess, Sabbath School Superintendent, and Hospitality Leader. She especially enjoyed visiting seniors who were no longer able to attend church.

As a founding member of Lighthouse Seventh-day Adventist Church, Luna helped in the building and growth of the church. She was committed, talented, and always willing to use her abilities wherever they were needed. She could often be found on Saturday nights selling dumplings, pudding, toto, and other items to raise funds for the church building. She gave freely, served faithfully, and believed deeply in the work of the Lord.

Luna loved to travel and was blessed to attend five General Conference Sessions, both in and outside of the United States. She was passionate about cooking and was proud to be self-taught. She made sure there was always something to offer to anyone who stopped by, whether at her home or at church. Hospitality was not just something she practiced; it was part of who she was.

Gardening was one of Luna’s great loves, and God blessed her with a green thumb. She found joy in planting, nurturing, and watching things grow. In many ways, this reflected her life: she planted seeds of faith, love, strength, kindness, and service in her children, her family, her church, and her community.

One of Luna’s greatest desires for her children was that they would love and be kind to one another and to everyone they met. Most of all, she wanted them to love the Lord. She worked hard all her days and was deeply motivated to protect her children at all costs.

If there was a need and Luna could help, she was all in. Like the faithful women of Scripture, she gave from the heart and trusted God to provide. Time and time again, the more she gave, the more she received. She was fearless like Esther, never easily intimidated or threatened. She stood firmly in her faith and faced life with courage.

The Bible asks, “Who can find a virtuous woman?” We did. Her name was Luna May Allen Cornish. To meet her was to love her. Luna, our mother, was a God-fearing woman, and to have been raised, loved, and protected by her was a priceless gift.

Among her favorite words of faith were:

“The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”

“The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

“God is our refuge and strength.”

Luna was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Allen; her six brothers; two sisters; and her beloved child who passed away at a young age.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Clinton Cornish Sr.(Euthencia), Havolin Smith (Woodrow), Calbert Cornish (Mildred), Aldris Griffiths (Kenneth Sr., Anthony Cornish (Monique), and Mavolin Cornish; Her grandchildren: Clinton Cornish II, Tiara Foreman (Tyson Sr.), Philip Cornish (Raven), Monica Cornish, Christopher Allie, John M. V. Smith, Paul Cornish, Kenneth D Griffiths, Rowan R. Robotham II, and Caroline Griffiths; and her great-grandchildren, Ta’liyah, Tyson Jr, Ta’Lyssa, Ta’mya, Ymoni and Brian, Kayson and Lennox.

She also leaves to mourn her twin sisters, Lillian and Cislyn; nieces, nephews, extended relatives, countless friends, and church family.

Luna May Allen Cornish lived a life of faith, sacrifice, courage, service, and love. Her legacy will continue through the lives she touched, the family she raised, the church she served, and the God she faithfully trusted.
